Technical purpose of product or process Austrotherm UNIPLATTE® is waterproof, thermally insulating, pressure-resistant and therefore especially suitable as a support panel for tiling using the thin-bed method. The design possibilities of Austrotherm UNIPLATTE® are very versatile. Austrotherm UNIPLATTE® is therefore ideally suited for the wet area in bathroom and wellness facilities. It can be used both in new buildings and in renovations. It is used as a tile support panel in the wall area, as a partition wall solution, and in the floor area. As construction panels, it can be used to create bathroom furniture, benches, couches, niches, and shelves.

Technology description including background system Manufacture XPS is manufactured in a continuous extrusion process with electricity as the main energy source. Polystyrene granulate is melted together with the named auxiliary materials in the extruder under high pressure. The propellant is dissolved in the melted mass and then discharged through a wide slot nozzle. The propellant foams the melt as a result of the falling counterpressure, cools it down and then the polystyrene solidifies. The result is a continuous strand of homogeneous and closed-cell rigid polystyrene foam. This is cooled further and the extrusion layer is removed. To coat the rigid foam boards, the mortar is mixed with water and applied to the XPS core together with the glass fabric, dried and the boards then sized. These are packed onto pallets in polyethylene film. XPS from production leftover cuts and production scrap can be recycled directly in production and reused to produce XPS. Polystyrene is a thermoplastic material, meaning it can be easily and cost-effectively recycled by melting it.

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
