Technology description including background system A concrete paving stone is a prefabricated concrete product that is used to pave traffic areas (DIN EN 1338). Such a paving stone can present a single-layer or two-layer structure. In the case of a single-layer structure, the paving stone is made of homogeneous concrete. In contrast, a two-layer structure consists of a core concrete layer and a face layer that is placed on top of the core concrete. It usually consists of a higher quality concrete than the core concrete layer and represents the actual visible and usable surface. In addition to high mechanical properties, paving stones must be sufficiently resistant to attack by frost and de-icing salt, depending on the area of application. The declared products are two-layer concrete paving stones in various formats and sizes. The concrete is made from natural and recycled aggregates, hydraulic binders (cement), water, admixtures and, if necessary, additives. The declaration relates to the production and end of life of 1m² Stonecycle® concrete paving stone with over 40% recycled aggregates with an average basis weight of 180 kg/m² and a paving stone thickness of 8 cm.

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
