Key Data Set Information
Location AT
Reference year 2024
Name
Fundermax Biofiber - Wood fiber boards
Use advice for data set This Environmental Product Declaration refers to a declared unit of 1 m³ of average Fundermax Biofaser (1000 kg/m³) produced at the site in St. Veit/Glan (Austria) under the Biofaser brand name. The life cycle assessment of the Biofaser board covers a cradle-to-gate assessment (from cradle to factory gate) of the environmental impacts arising, with modules C1–C4 and module D (A1–A3,+C,+D). The following life cycle stages are included in the analysis: Module A1–A3 | Product stage The product stage includes the inputs required to supply raw materials (fibre wood, phenolic resin, paraffin wax, etc.) and the associated transport to the production site in St. Veit/Glan. Within the factory boundaries, the process steps for producing Biofaser products, including packaging the Biofaser boards, are considered. The manufacturing process is modelled based on primary data from the site under consideration. Electrical energy is supplied at the St. Veit/Glan site by its own biomass combined heat and power plant. In addition, electricity from the Austrian grid and natural gas are purchased externally. Module C1 | Deconstruction / demolition The products are deconstructed manually or with limited use of machinery. It is therefore assumed that the energy required for deconstructing the products is negligible, and no environmental impacts from product deconstruction are declared in Module C1. Module C2 | Transport Module C2 covers transport of the product for waste disposal. A truck transport distance of 50 km is assumed in the scenario. Module C3 | Waste processing for material recycling In Scenario 0, Module C3 covers the inputs required to reduce the products in size as a basis for recycling. Module C3 covers the inputs required for waste management. The wood products, together with their material-inherent properties, leave the product system as secondary material in Module C3. The anticipated impact of chipping the wood is also considered. Module C3/1 | Waste processing for energy recovery In Scenario 1, Module C3/1 covers the inputs required to reduce the products in size as a basis for recycling. Module C3/1 covers the inputs required for waste management. The wood products, together with their material-inherent properties, leave the product system as secondary fuel in Module C3/1. The anticipated impact of chipping the wood is also considered. Module C4 and C4/1 | Disposal The assumed Scenario 0 declares material recovery; Scenario 1 declares energy recovery of the products, so no environmental impacts from product disposal are expected in C4 or C4/1. Module D | Benefits and loads beyond the system boundary for recycling Module D declares a recycling scenario that takes into account the substitution potential of low-quality sawmill by-products. Module D/1 | Benefits and loads beyond the system boundary for energy recovery Module D/1 declares the substitution potential for heat and electricity from energy recovery of the product in Module C3/1, based on a European average scenario.
Technical purpose of product or process Applications in the door industry, automotive industry, packaging industry, furniture industry, footwear industry, construction industry, and in trade.
Classification
Class name : Hierarchy level

Technology description including background system The 100 % usable raw material, wood, is reduced in size. The wood chips are conveyed through a flume channel to the dewatering machine, where they are cleaned. The cleaned wood chips are transported from the chip silo to the fibre preparation stage, where they are thermomechanically defibrated using a pressurised refiner. Adding water produces a fibre suspension of approx. 2 %. The fibre material is first formed and then dewatered with controlled orientation of the wood fibres using a newly developed twin-wire dewatering technology. The fibre mat produced in this way is fed into the hot press with a simultaneous closing device, where it is pressed into a biofibre board under precisely controlled pressure and temperature conditions. After pressing, the board is conditioned in the climate chamber to a moisture content of approx. 4-8 %. Finally, the boards are further processed to meet customer specifications. The product performance values are based on the data in the Declaration of Performance.

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
