Name
Fundermax MAX Compact Interior - High-pressure laminate panel
Use advice for data set This Environmental Product Declaration refers to a declared unit of 1 m² MAX Compact Interior laminate panel (8,9 kg/m²) produced at the Wiener Neudorf site (Austria) under the MAX Compact Interior brand name. A separate EPD annex contains further information on the environmental impacts of MAX Compact Interior with thicknesses of 10, 13 and 20 mm. The life cycle assessment of the MAX Compact Interior laminate panel includes a cradle-to-gate assessment (from cradle to factory gate) of the environmental impacts, with modules C1–C4 and module D (A1–A3,+C,+D). The following life cycle stages are considered in the analysis: Module A1–A3 | Product stage The product stage includes the impacts of raw material supply (kraft paper, decor paper, phenolic resin, melamine resin, etc.) and the associated transport to the production site in Wiener Neudorf. Within the factory boundaries, the process steps for producing Compact products (impregnation, lacquering, drying, cutting, pressing, finishing), including packaging of the laminate panels, are considered. The manufacturing process is modelled on the basis of primary data from the site under consideration. Electrical energy is supplied at the Wiener Neudorf site from the Austrian electricity grid. Thermal energy is supplied partly by the site's thermal post-combustion plant and partly by natural gas. Module C1 | Deconstruction / demolition The products are deconstructed manually or with minimal use of machinery. It is therefore assumed that the energy required for deconstruction of the products is negligible, and no environmental impacts from product deconstruction are declared in module C1. Module C2 | Transport to waste treatment Module C2 includes transport to waste treatment. A scenario assuming transport by truck over a transport distance of 50 km is used. Module C3 | Waste treatment For Compact products, it is assumed that at the end of their life they are used for energy recovery in a waste incineration plant. The emissions from incineration are declared in module C3. Based on information from Sphera, an R1 value of > 0,6 is assumed for the waste incineration plant. Module C4 | Disposal The environmental burdens from energy recovery of the declared products are declared in module C3. Therefore, no inputs are declared in module C4. Module D | Benefits and loads beyond the system boundary Module D describes the substitution potentials for heat and electricity from energy recovery of the product in module C3, using a European average scenario.
Technical purpose of product or process MAX Compact Interior can be used in both private and public sectors. They are particularly suitable for residential interiors, hospitals, public buildings, railway stations and airports, for public transport, hotels, schools, commercial premises, sports facilities, and industrial applications. The special properties enable the use of MAX Compact Interior in heavily used interior spaces as wall and ceiling cladding, railing infill panels, furniture, tables, column coverings, play equipment, etc.

General comment on data set MAX Compact Interior are decorative high-pressure laminate panels (HPL) according to EN 438-4 (MAX Compact Interior) for use as wall and ceiling coverings as well as a furniture board for indoor applications. Decorative high-pressure laminate panels are made from cellulose fibre mats and curable resins. They can be produced in a variety of colors and patterns in different surface textures. MAX Compact Interior can be glued, screwed, or riveted to substructures such as metal and wood. In addition, a wide range of other fastening and joining elements is applicable.

Technology description including background system Compact panels are manufactured by pressing cellulose fibre webs impregnated with curable resins while simultaneously applying heat (temperature ≥ 120 °C) and high pressure (≥ 5 MPa). This produces a homogeneous, non-porous material with increased density (≥ 1,35 g/cm³) and the required surface finish. The product performance values are as stated in the declaration of performance.

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
