Technical purpose of product or process Facing bricks are used for exposed brickwork and facing brickwork and are manufactured as solid or perforated bricks. Facing bricks are mainly used for façade design and generally remain visible on the building. Facing bricks are available in various structures and colors. As they are exposed to the weather, they must be frost-resistant. Bricks are used for the construction of walls, among other things. Clinker bricks are particularly densely fired bricks with a sintered surface. Sintering means that the high firing temperature during clinker brick production gives the visible surfaces a glassy, dense character. Clinker bricks are frost-resistant and are therefore used for plinths, chimneys, paths and squares, among other things.

Technology description including background system DeFries bricks are old products made by hand decades ago, which have been salvaged and refurbished by hand. Any mortar residue is removed with a compressed air chisel hammer or a brush and thus cleaned. No other manufacturing processes take place The properties listed below apply to all bricks reconditioned by DeFries and represent an average value for facing bricks. Due to the origin of the bricks, there may be batch-specific deviations. This declaration refers to one cubic meter of reused bricks with an average bulk density of 1,801 kg/m³. The apparent density was determined in 2022 using a random sample of ten brick batches. The gross density of all samples ranged from 1726 kg/m³ to 1892 kg/m².

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
