Name
Fundermax MAX Compact Exterior - HPL laminate panels
Use advice for data set This Environmental Product Declaration refers to a declared unit of 1 m² of MAX Compact Exterior laminate panel (8,7 kg/m²) produced at the site in Wiener Neudorf (Austria) under the brand name MAX Compact Exterior. A separate EPD annex contains further information on the environmental impacts of MAX Compact Exterior with a thickness of 8, 10 and 16 mm. The life cycle assessment of the MAX Compact Exterior laminate panel includes a cradle-to-gate assessment (from cradle to factory gate) of the environmental impacts arising, with modules C1–C4 and module D (A1–A3,+C,+D). The following life cycle stages are considered in the analysis: Module A1–A3 | Product stage The product stage includes the inputs for the supply of raw materials (kraft paper, decor paper, phenolic resin, melamine resin, etc.) and the associated transport to the production site in Wiener Neudorf. Within the factory boundaries, the process steps for manufacturing Compact products (impregnation, coating, drying, cutting, pressing, finishing), including the packaging of the laminate panels, are considered. The manufacturing process is modelled on the basis of primary data from the site under consideration. Electrical energy is supplied at the Wiener Neudorf site via electricity from the Austrian grid. Thermal energy is supplied partly by the thermal afterburning plant at the site and partly by natural gas. Module C1 | Deconstruction / demolition The products are deconstructed manually or with minimal use of machinery. It is therefore assumed that the energy required for deconstructing the products is negligible, and no environmental impacts from product deconstruction are declared in module C1. Module C2 | Transport to waste treatment Module C2 includes transport to waste treatment. For this purpose, a transport distance of 50 km by truck is assumed as the scenario. Module C3 | Waste treatment For Compact products, it is assumed that at the end of their life they are recovered in a waste incineration plant to generate energy. Emissions from incineration are declared in module C3. Based on information from Sphera, an R1 value of > 0,6 is assumed for the waste incineration plant. Module C4 | Disposal The environmental burdens from energy recovery of the declared products are declared in module C3. Therefore, no inputs are declared in module C4. Module D | Benefits and loads beyond the system boundary Module D describes the substitution potentials for heat and electricity from energy recovery of the product in module C3 in the form of a European average scenario.
Technical purpose of product or process MAX Compact Exterior can be used in both private and public sectors. They are particularly suitable for residential use, hospitals, public buildings, train stations and airports, for public transport, hotels, schools, commercial premises, sports facilities, and industrial applications. The special properties allow the use of MAX Compact Exterior outdoors as facade cladding (ventilated façade), undersides, railing infill panels, furniture, tables, column claddings, playground equipment, etc.

General comment on data set MAX Compact Exterior are decorative high-pressure laminate panels (HPL) in accordance with EN 438-6 (MAX Compact Exterior) for use as wall and ceiling coverings as well as furniture panels in exterior applications. Decorative high-pressure laminate panels are manufactured from cellulose fiber mats and curable resins. They can be produced in a range of colors and patterns in various surface textures. MAX Compact Exterior can be glued, screwed or riveted to substrates made of metal and wood. In addition, a wide range of other fastening and joining accessories are applicable.

Technology description including background system Compact laminates are manufactured by pressing cellulose fibre sheets impregnated with curable resins while simultaneously applying heat (temperature ≥ 120 °C) and high pressure (≥ 5 MPa), resulting in a homogeneous, non-porous material with increased density (≥ 1,35 g/cm³) and the required surface finish. The product’s performance values are given in the declaration of performance.

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
