Technical purpose of product or process The present Environmental Product Declaration refers to concrete paving stones and slabs with a surface layer, ground and provided with surface protection, as well as curbstones with a surface layer, manufactured by Betonwerk Lintel GmbH & Co. KG. The production sites considered are located in Rheda-Wiedenbrück, Paderborn, Brilon, Lemgo, and Porta Westfalica. Data collection was specific to each plant for the year 2022. The concrete products are manufactured using natural aggregates, cement, and water, with or without the addition of admixtures and additives, through mechanical processes. Products with different surface treatments (colored, shot-blasted, brushed, ground, ground and shot-blasted, with and without surface protection) have been included in the overall assessment. Concrete products are used, among other things, as flooring for industrial and commercial roads, village main streets, bus traffic and parking areas, as well as other paths and squares. Performance values of the product correspond to the performance declaration regarding its essential characteristics according to DIN EN 1338, DIN EN 1339, and DIN EN 1340. The declaration pertains to the manufacturing and end-of-life of one square meter (m²) of concrete paving stone with an average area weight of 368 kg/m² and a paving stone thickness of 16 cm, or one meter of concrete curbstone with an average weight of 170 kg/m² and a height of 30 cm.

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
