Name
Float glass in construction: EUROFLOAT
Technical purpose of product or process Float glass is further processed into: Thermally insulating glass Highly thermally insulating glass for passive house construction Sound-insulating glass Solar control insulating glass Laminated safety glass (VSG) Toughened safety glass (ESG) Partially toughened glass (TVG) Fire-resistant glass Printed and enameled glass Combinations of glass for multifunctional applications and serves as a base material for Glass in structural construction, Facades and windows Interior applications (e.g. partition walls, kitchens, wet rooms) Industrial applications

Technology description including background system Float glass is produced in a long, continuous flow. This results in a continuous glass ribbon. Only the highest precision over the entire production line of several hundred meters can guarantee the high quality of float glass. All the raw materials are mixed in the batch house and then enter the melting furnace. There they are melted at a temperature of approx. 1550°C and purified with few bubbles. The molten glass is fed into the float bath, which contains a tin melt in an inert gas atmosphere. The glass mass 'floats' on the molten tin in the form of an endless ribbon. The flat surface of the tin bath and heating from above results in a plane-parallel glass. The glass ribbon is formed with so-called top rollers and the glass thickness is adjusted by the drawing speed. In the cooling tunnel and the subsequent open roller conveyor, the glass ribbon is continuously cooled from 600 to 60°C, checked for defects using camera technology and then cut into glass sheets of predominantly 3210 x 6000 mm. All locations where float glass is produced are certified in accordance with EN ISO 9001.

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
