GUTEX Thermofibre - wood fiber insulation
Use advice for data set Scope: This environmental product declaration applies to the loose wood-fiber insulation GUTEX Thermofibre produced at the Gutenburg plant (see manufacturer address). System boundary: The declaration type corresponds to an EPD 'cradle-to-gate - with options'. Contents are the production stage, i.e., from the provision of raw materials to the factory gate of production (cradle-to-gate, Modules A1-A3), as well as the disposal of the product packaging in Module A5 and the end of life (Module C1-C4). In addition, consideration of potential benefits and burdens beyond the product's life cycle (Module D) is carried out. In detail, Module A1 accounts for the provision of the wood raw material in the form of wood chips from the forest and the provision of the additives. The transports of these materials are taken into account in Module A2. Module A3 covers the provision of fuels, operating resources and electricity as well as the on-site manufacturing processes. These are essentially the fiberization, fiber drying, filling, and packaging of the products. In Module A5, only the disposal of the product packaging is depicted. As the electricity mix, the purchased green electricity and self-generated electricity from a natural gas CHP plant are used. In Module C1, a manual dismantling without burdens is assumed; Module C2 accounts for the transport to end-of-life wood processing. Moreover, in Module C3, in accordance with EN 16485, the CO2 equivalents of the carbon inherent in the wood contained in the product as well as the renewable primary energy (PERM) contained in the product are recorded as outputs. Module C4 is considered according to the regulatory provisions of AltholzV 2020, which do not provide for landfilling of end-of-life wood. The burdens and potentials resulting from the thermal valorization of the product at the end of its life, as well as the potential benefit from substituting fossil fuels in energy generation during the thermal valorization of the product packaging, are accounted for in Module D. Credits obtained from the disposal of the wastes generated in production are credited on the basis of a system expansion. It is assumed that the thermal energy would be generated from natural gas and that the substituted electricity would correspond to the German electricity mix of 2021. Packaging: potential benefits are treated in accordance with the disposal of waste described above.
Technical purpose of product or process The thermal insulation material is used for the production of non-load-bearing insulating layers by mechanical processing at the application site. The following application areas are possible: * Space-filling insulation in closed cavities of exterior and interior walls * Insulation in closed cavities between rafters and wooden beams * Exposed insulation on horizontal or moderately inclined surfaces * Insulation of non-walkable, yet accessible top-floor ceilings * Cavity insulation between bearing timbers in the floor area and comparable substructures

General comment on data set GUTEX Thermofibre are loose wood fibers, dried in accordance with ETA-12/0181, and supplied in pre-compressed bundles. The wood fibers are produced from softwood chips by mechanical comminution. The bulk density for blowing depends on the application and is, on average, about 35 kg/m³.

Technology description including background system The starting point for product manufacture is wood chips supplied by regional sawmills, which are broken down into wood fibers under the influence of moisture and heat. The fibers are then dried and packed into consistently large and heavy containers in a filling process.

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
