Name
GUTEX Thermoflex - wood fiber insulation mat
Use advice for data set Scope: This Environmental Product Declaration applies to the wood-fiber insulation mats GUTEX Thermoflex produced at the Gutenburg plant (see manufacturer's address). System boundary: The declaration type corresponds to an EPD 'cradle-to-factory gate with options'. Contents are the production stage, from the provision of raw materials to the factory gate of production (cradle-to-gate, Modules A1 to A3), as well as the disposal of the product packaging in Module A5 and the end of life (Modules C1 to C4). In addition, an assessment of potential benefits and burdens beyond the product's life cycle (Module D) is performed. In detail, Module A1 accounts for the provision of the wood raw material in the form of wood chips from the forest and the provision of the additives. The transports of these materials are considered in Module A2. Module A3 comprises the provision of fuels, operating materials and electricity, as well as the onsite manufacturing processes. These are essentially fiberization, fiber drying, pressing and cutting, as well as packaging of the products. In Module A5 only the disposal of the product packaging is depicted, since the representative installation scenario is carried out manually. As the electricity mix, the purchased green electricity and self-generated electricity from a natural gas CHP plant are assumed. In Module C1 a manual dismantling without burdens is assumed, Module C2 accounts for the transport to the wood-waste processing facility. Moreover, in Module C3, in accordance with EN 16485, the CO2-equivalents of the carbon embedded in the wood constituent of the product, as well as the renewable and non-renewable primary energy (PERM and PENRM) contained in the product, are recorded as outputs. Module C4 is considered in accordance with the regulatory provisions of the AltholzV 2020, which do not permit landfilling of waste wood. The Module D accounts for the burdens and potentials arising from the thermal utilization of the product at the end of its life, as well as the potential benefit from substituting fossil fuels in energy generation during the thermal utilization of the product packaging. Credits obtained from disposal of production waste are accounted for based on system expansion. It is assumed that the thermal energy is produced from natural gas and that the substituted electricity would correspond to the German electricity mix of 2021. Packaging: potential benefits are treated in accordance with the waste disposal described above.
Technical purpose of product or process The flexible wood-fiber insulation material GUTEX Thermoflex is used as cavity insulation between rafters, ceiling joists, wall studs, or similar framing constructions. The areas of application in accordance with DIN 4108-10 must be observed.

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
