Name
RAUKANTEX PP eco - PP-based edge band
Use advice for data set Scope: The EPD applies to the extruded PP-based furniture edgings of the types * RAUKANTEX eco decor * RAUKANTEX eco decor pro * RAUKANTEX eco color * RAUKANTEX eco color pro manufactured at the REHAU plant in Rehau, Germany. All declared products are produced by the company * REHAU Industries SE & Co. KG. This is a Representative EPD, in which the above-mentioned products are declared via a representative product variant. System boundary: Type of EPD: cradle-to-gate (Modules A1–A3) with consideration of disposal (Modules C1 to C4) and the benefits and burdens from reuse (Module D). The following flow diagram shows the system boundaries for the accounting of RAUKANTEX PP eco: A1 – A3 Manufacturing phase * Production of raw materials, auxiliary materials and operating materials, including transport to the respective plant * Processing of secondary material from milling fines to regranulate * Manufacture of pre-products and packaging and transport to the respective plant * Production and packaging of the furniture edgings * Transport and recovery of production and packaging waste C1 – C4 End-of-Life * End-of-Life (EoL) Scenario 1 (Recycling): Dismantling of the furniture edge in combination with the respective substrate with subsequent material recovery (Module C3/1 and D/1 in the assessment). * EoL Scenario 2 (Energy recovery from waste): Dismantling of the furniture edge in combination with the respective substrate with subsequent thermal recovery with energy recovery (Module C3/2 and D/2 in the assessment). * EoL Scenario 3 (Deposition): Dismantling of the furniture edge in combination with the respective substrate with subsequent deposition (Module C4/3 and D/3 in the assessment). During the material recovery of the furniture edge at the end of life, the impacts of recycling up to and including the milling of the edge are allocated. As milling scrap, the recyclate loses its waste status and exits the system boundary. D Reuse, Recovery and/or Recycling potentials Reuse, recovery and/or recycling potentials exist in the disposal scenarios, as here the furniture edgings are partly subjected to energetic or material valorization, from which energy or secondary materials can be recovered that can be used outside the system boundary.
Technical purpose of product or process These are furniture edge bands for covering the cut edges of carrier boards in the furniture industry. They are designed for indoor use and are specially stabilised.

General comment on data set The EPD applies to the extruded PP-based furniture edges of the following types * RAUKANTEX eco decor (PP, pure) * RAUKANTEX eco decor pro (PP) * RAUKANTEX eco color (PP, pure) * RAUKANTEX eco color pro (PP) manufactured at the REHAU plant in the town of Rehau, Germany. The designations above in parentheses are not part of the official product designation, but are used here to distinguish the furniture-edge types. In line with the diversity of possible applications and designs of the carrier boards, the edge-band variants are also extremely varied. The declared furniture edges consist of a mixture of polypropylene (PP) virgin material and externally sourced PP post-industrial recycled material. Apart from that, the furniture edges differ in their contact layer to the carrier material (pure: adhesion-promoter layer, pro: functional layer made of polymer) as well as in the surface finish (color: possibly a paint layer, decor: gravure printing layer with additional coating). The representative furniture-edge variant on which this environmental product declaration is based is: * RAUKANTEX eco decor (PP, pure) with a width of 23 mm and a thickness of 1.2 mm. The manufacture of the furniture edges takes place in Germany. The products are used worldwide with a focus on Europe.

Technology description including background system The declared furniture edgebands are part of the RAUKANTEX product family from REHAU Industries SE & Co KG's Interior Solutions division. They are used to cover the cutting edges of carrier boards in the furniture industry. Corresponding to the variety of possible applications and designs of the carrier boards, the designs of the edgebands are also rich in variety. Polypropylene (PP) with a share of 50 % post-industrial recycled material is used as the base polymer for the declared furniture edgebands. The contact layer with the core board can be designed either as a conventional bonding agent layer or as a functional polymer layer. There is a wide range of options for embossing, gravure printing and lacquering the furniture edgeband. Technical data: The technical data of the products within the scope of the EPD are given with reference to the underlying validation rules of the individual data. The performance values of the product with regard to its features shall apply according to the relevant technical provision. Declared unit: The declared unit is 1 kg of edgeband of the type RAUKANTEX PP eco. Conversion to grammage and density differs depending on dimension, design of the contact surface and surface of the edgebands. The data given herein refer to the representative furniture edgeband RAUKANTEX eco decor (PP pure) forming the basis for the lifecycle assessment. This product variant decor pure is most frequently produced for RAUKANTEX products based on PP and ABS. This is also to be expected for the RAUKANTEX PP eco variant made of recyclate.

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
