Ytong aerated concrete 2.5/0.40 RO - Unreinforced aerated concrete blocks
Use advice for data set Scope: The life cycle assessment is based on the consumption data of the Romanian Xella aerated concrete plant in Paulesti and the database for the year 2022. System boundary: Type of EPD: cradle-to-gate with options. Description of life cycle phases: Product stage (A1–A3) Raw material provision as well as truck transport of raw materials to the plant. Production inputs, in particular provisioning and use of energy carriers and auxiliaries, as well as packaging material. Treatment of production waste and wastewater. Stage of construction of the building (A4–A5) Module A4: Truck transport to the construction site (100 km). Transport distance can, where applicable, be adjusted at building level (e.g., for 200 km actual transport distance: multiply the LCA values by the factor 2). Module A5: Thermal packaging treatment and resulting credits in Module D. Scrap/off-cuts were not considered, as they depend strongly on the building context. Off-cuts can be approximately estimated using the declared values for the production stage (e.g., 5% off-cuts: multiply the LCA values by the factor 0.05). The installation of the products themselves is typically manual (no lifting equipment required). Mortar is not considered in this EPD. Use stage (B1) Recarbonation of reactive product constituents (e.g., CaO). A recarbonation rate of 95% is assumed (Walther 2022). End-of-life stage (C1–C4) Module C1: Mechanical dismantling (excavator). Module C2: Truck transport to waste processing facility (50 km). Transport distance can, where applicable, be adjusted at building level (e.g., for 100 km actual transport distance: multiply the LCA values by the factor 2). Module C3: (Scenario for material recycling): Waste processing and material recycling as filler material (including credits for substitution of gravel in Module D). Module C4: (Scenario for landfilling): Average emissions from landfilling. Credits and burdens outside the system boundaries (D) Credits from avoided costs due to substitution of gravel as fill material (from Module C3) and credits for energy substitution from packaging treatment.
Technical purpose of product or process Unreinforced masonry units for masonry, monolithic, load‑bearing and non‑load‑bearing walls. According to the specification, direct contact with water is avoided during construction.

Technology description including background system The ground quartz sand is mixed with lime, cement and crushed aerated concrete recycling material, with the addition of water and aluminium powder or paste, in a mixer to form an aqueous suspension and poured into casting moulds. The water dissolves the lime while generating heat. The aluminium reacts in an alkaline environment. This produces gaseous hydrogen, which creates the pores in the paste and escapes without leaving any residue. The pores usually have a diameter of 0.5 - 1.5 mm and are filled exclusively with air. After initial setting, semi-solid raw blocks are produced, from which the aerated concrete components are cut mechanically and with high precision. Technical data: See the Declaration of Performance for the respective product. The following table includes general data. Declared unit: The declared unit is 1 m unreinforced autoclaved aerated concrete of the raw density class 0.4 with a gross density of 383 kg/m. The average gross density was determined by averaging the data from the factory production control (FPC) in the reference year.

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
