Fundermax MAX Compact Interior - High-pressure laminate board
Use advice for data set Scope: The present Environmental Product Declaration relates to a declared unit of 1 m² MAX Compact Interior decorative laminate panel (8.9 kg/m²) produced at the Wiener Neudorf site (Austria) under the brand name MAX Compact Interior. A separate EPD annex contains further information on the environmental impacts of MAX Compact Interior with thicknesses of 10, 13, and 20 mm. System boundary: The life cycle assessment (LCA) of the MAX Compact Interior decorative laminate panel includes a cradle-to-gate assessment (cradle-to-gate) of the environmental impacts with the modules C1–C4 and Module D (A1–A3, +C, +D). The following life cycle stages are considered in the analysis: Module A1–A3 | Production stage The production stage includes the inputs for raw material supply (kraft paper, decor paper, phenol resin, melamine resin, etc.) as well as the associated transports related to the production site in Wiener Neudorf. Within the plant boundaries, the process steps for producing the Compact products (impregnation, coating, drying, cutting, pressing, final assembly) including the packaging of the laminate panels are considered. The manufacturing process is modeled based on the primary data of the site in question. Electric energy is provided at the Wiener Neudorf site from the Austrian grid. Thermal energy is provided in part via the site’s thermal post-combustion plant and by natural gas. Module C1 | Demolition / Dismantling The products are dismantled manually or with limited use of machinery. Thus, it is assumed that the energy demand for dismantling of the products represents a negligible factor, therefore no environmental impacts from dismantling are declared in Module C1. Module C2 | Transport to waste treatment Module C2 includes the transport to waste treatment. The scenario assumes road transport by truck over a distance of 50 km. Module C3 | Waste treatment In the case of the Compact products it is assumed that at end of life they are recovered in a waste-to-energy plant to generate energy. Emissions from the incineration are declared in Module C3. Based on information from Sphera, an R1 value for the waste incineration plant of > 0.6 is assumed. Module C4 | Disposal The environmental burdens from the energetic utilization of the declared products are declared in Module C3. Thus, no inputs in Module C4 are to be declared. Module D | Benefits and burdens outside the system boundary In Module D, the substitution potentials for heat and electricity from the energetic utilization of the product in Module C3 are described in the form of a European average scenario.
Technical purpose of product or process MAX Compact Interior can be used in both private and public sectors. They are particularly suitable for residential interiors, hospitals, public buildings, railway stations and airports, for public transport, hotels, schools, commercial premises, sports facilities, and industrial applications. The special properties enable the use of MAX Compact Interior in heavily used interior spaces as wall and ceiling cladding, railing infill panels, furniture, tables, column coverings, play equipment, etc.

Technology description including background system Compact laminates are produced by pressing cellulose fibre webs impregnated with curable resins while applying heat (temperature ≥ 120 °C) and high pressure (≥ 5 MPa), resulting in a homogeneous, non-porous material with increased density (≥ 1.35 g/cm³) and the required surface quality. Technical data: The data in the declaration of performance apply to the performance values of the product. Declared unit: This EPD refers to a declared unit of 1 m MAX Compact Interior high-pressure laminate with a thickness of 6 mm and a surface weight of 8.9 kg/m. Packaging is considered in the LCA.

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
