Name
Fundermax MAX Compact Exterior - HPL high-pressure laminate panels
Use advice for data set Scope: The present Environmental Product Declaration refers to a declared unit of 1 m² MAX Compact Exterior decorative laminate panel (8.7 kg/m²) produced at the Wiener Neudorf site (Austria) under the brand name MAX Compact Exterior. A separate EPD appendix contains further information on the environmental impacts of MAX Compact Exterior with a thickness of 8, 10 and 16 mm. System boundary: The life cycle assessment of the MAX Compact Exterior laminate panel includes a cradle-to-gate assessment (cradle to factory gate) of the environmental impacts with the modules C1–C4 and Module D (A1–A3,+C,+D). The following life cycle stages are considered in the analysis: Module A1–A3 | Production stage The production stage includes the inputs for raw material supply (kraft paper, decorative paper, phenol resin, melamine resin etc.) as well as the associated transportation related to the production site in Wiener Neudorf. Within the plant boundaries the process steps for producing the Compact products (impregnation, coating, drying, cutting, pressing, final assembly) including the packaging of the laminate panels are considered. The manufacturing process is modeled based on the primary data of the site in question. The supply of electrical energy at the Wiener Neudorf site is via electricity from the Austrian grid. Thermal energy is provided on the one hand via the site's thermal post-combustion plant and by natural gas. Module C1 | Deconstruction / Demolition The products are dismantled manually or with limited use of machinery. Thus, energy demand for deconstruction is a negligible factor, and no environmental impacts from deconstruction are declared in Module C1. Module C2 | Transport to waste treatment Module C2 includes transport to waste treatment. The transport by truck over a distance of 50 km is assumed as the scenario. Module C3 | Waste treatment In the case of the Compact products it is assumed that at end of life they are valorized in a waste incineration plant for energy recovery. The emissions from the incineration are declared in Module C3. Based on information from Sphera an R1 value of the waste incineration plant of > 0.6 is assumed. Module C4 | Disposal The environmental burdens from energy recovery of the declared products are declared in Module C3. Thus, no burdens are to be declared in Module C4. Module D | Benefits and burdens outside the system boundary In Module D the substitution potentials for heat and electricity from the energy recovery of the product in Module C3 are described in the form of a European average scenario.
Technical purpose of product or process MAX Compact Exterior can be used in both private and public sectors. They are particularly suitable for residential use, hospitals, public buildings, train stations and airports, for public transport, hotels, schools, commercial premises, sports facilities, and industrial applications. The special properties allow the use of MAX Compact Exterior outdoors as facade cladding (ventilated façade), undersides, railing infill panels, furniture, tables, column claddings, playground equipment, etc.

Technology description including background system Compact laminates are produced by pressing cellulose fibre webs impregnated with curable resins while applying heat (temperature ≥ 120 °C) and high pressure (≥ 5 MPa), resulting in a homogeneous, non-porous material with increased density (≥ 1.35 g/cm³) and the required surface quality. Technical data: The data in the declaration of performance apply to the performance values of the product Declared unit: This EPD refers to a declared unit of 1 m2 MAX Compact Exterior high-pressure laminate with a thickness of 6 mm and a surface weight of 8.7 kg/m2. Packaging is considered in the LCA.

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
