Welding consumables - Solid wire electrodes, solid wires and solid rods for high strength and creep resisting steels and selected hard facing alloys
Use advice for data set Scope: The present EPD relates to a declared unit of 1 metric ton of average medium alloyed Bhler Welding solid welding wire produced at the production site in Hamm (Germany). System boundary: This EPD refers to the declaration of a cradle-to-gate analysis: Module A1–A3 | Production stage The production stage includes the upstream burdens of raw material supply (steel wire), their transport and the manufacturing at voestalpine Bhler Welding located in Hamm (Germany). The production processes in Hamm include drawing, annealing, surface modification, copper coating and packaging. Electricity provision at Hamm is considered based on the residual grid mix for Germany. Thermal energy for the production is provided based on natural gas as well as district heating from a waste incineration plant. The packaging of the product is considered in Modules A1–A3, declaring a representative packaging (wire basket spool BS 300). As the declared product is identified as an exemption according to EN 15804+A2 section 5.2., modules C1–C4 and module D are not declared.
Technical purpose of product or process Solid welding electrodes, wires and rods of voestalpine Bhler Welding Germany GmbH are available in different grades, diameters and packagings. The main application of the products is the use in arc welding processes. The field of applications is rather wide, from small parts and thin plates (automotive) to heavy wall thicknesses (wind energy). From fully automated processes (robot welding) to manual welding (steel construction, ship building). Typical segments are: shipbuilding, crane and lifting, automotive, power generation, general construction, yellow and green goods, pipe welding, pipeline laying, additive manufacturing and more

General comment on data set Welding wires, welding electrodes and rods of voestalpine Bhler Welding Germany GmbH are widely used for joining or cladding of all kinds of alloys. Welding consumables are standardised in codes and standards worldwide to which they comply. There is a variety of wire diameters and assemblies produced dedicated to different applications and welding processes, as defined in the among cited and including the applicable standards. The EPD covers solid wire electrode, solid wire and solid rod products, produced by voestalpine Bhler Welding Germany GmbH, which are classified under the following standards and partly restricted to the mentioned grades: EN ISO 16834:2012, Welding consumables - Wire electrodes, wires, rods and deposits for gas shielded arc welding of high strength steels - Classification EN ISO 26304:2017, Welding consumables - Solid wire electrodes, tubular cored electrodes and electrode-flux combinations for submerged arc welding of high strength steels - Classification EN ISO 21952:2012, Welding consumables - Wire electrodes, wires, rods and deposits for gas shielded arc welding of creep-resisting steels - Classification EN ISO 24598:2019, Welding consumables - Solid wire electrodes, tubular cored electrodes and electrode-flux combinations for submerged arc welding of creep-resisting steels – Classification EN ISO 20378:2018, Welding consumables—Rods for gas welding of non-alloy and creep-resisting steels -Classification (IV, V, Vi, 100, Z only) EN 14700:2022, Welding consumables – Welding consumables for hard-facing (Fe1, Fe2, Fe3, Fe4 only) and products for additive manufacturing based on the above mentioned standard, like: 3Dprint AM 62 3Dprint AM 70 3Dprint AM 80 HD 3Dprint AM P 22 3Dprint AM Tool 40 3Dprint AM Tool 45 3Dprint AM Tool 55 3Dprint AM TS 12

Technology description including background system Solid wires for welding of different steel grades are produced from hot rolled wire which is produced by hot rolling of casted slaps on special continuous rolling mills. At the beginning of the welding wire production, process surface grinding or pickling may be applied. A drawing process is in place to reduce the diameter of the wire to the planned end diameter stepwise. Depending on the steel grade intermediate heat treatments may be applied. Customizing is done by spooling on different spool types or bulk systems like drums. The finished product has to comply with different standards like CE, EN ISO, AWS, JIS or customer factory standards etc. depending on the region and/or industry where the products are used. Technical data: Based on their chemical composition the welding electrodes, welding wires and rods for high strength and creep resisting steels have different properties. Some mechanical properties are designated according to the corresponding international classifications (see 2.1): Typical high strength steel product: EN ISO 16834-A - G Mn4Ni1,5CrMo Typical creep resistant steel product: EN ISO 21952-A – G CrMo1Si Declared unit: This environmental product declaration refers to a declared unit of 1 metric ton of average medium alloyed Bhler Welding solid welding wire.

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
