Name
roller shutter - Exterior roller shutter with fabric
Use advice for data set Scope: The results of the EPD are representative for the roller shutter systems of the ROMA KG company (trade name: 'ROMA Rollladen'), manufactured at the sites Burgau, Rostock, Oschatz and Ludwigshafen (Germany). Here, individual components of the sun protection systems are produced. The concrete configuration of the roller shutter components was selected based on the bestseller. For each component, the variant with the highest environmental burden was considered. The basis of the EPD is production data from the year 2022. System boundary: Type of EPD: cradle-to-factory gate with options. A1-A3 The production stage includes raw material supply and manufacturing of pre-products and externally produced components as well as their transport to the ROMA plants. All inputs for manufacturing processes at ROMA have been accounted for (including energy and water provision, provision of auxiliary substances, disposal of waste). The transport inputs (A2) as well as the manufacturing processes (A3) are based on product-specific data. The manufacturing processes of the raw materials, pre-products and externally produced components (A1) are based on background data from Sphera's MLC databases. A4 Transport to the installation site (truck, diesel, 100 km). A5 Installation of the products: Thermal recovery of packaging waste. B6 Energy demand in the use phase. The energy demand is calculated from the power consumption of the motor used and the operating duration during the defined operating cycles (10,000 cycles). C1 Deinstallation of the products: Manual dismantling (unloaded). C2 Transport to the disposal site (truck, diesel, 50 km). C3 End-of-life stage: Waste treatment (thermal recovery of plastics, shredding of electronic waste). C4 Landfilling of inert materials. D Recycling potential (including melting process and credit for recovered metal) as well as potentials from energy substitution of the thermal recovery in modules A3, A5 and C3. For the thermal and electrical energy created in modules A5 and C3 by the thermal treatment of packaging and product waste, the potentials from energy substitution through the electricity grid mix and the thermal energy from natural gas were calculated using European datasets. Betrachtungszeitraum: The period studied for collecting production data refers to the year 2022.
Technical purpose of product or process ROMA roller shutters are used both as shading solutions in front of window surfaces for summer and winter thermal protection, as well as for privacy and weather protection. The shading fabric reduces noise, helps deter break-ins and contributes to improved security and privacy protection. The respective national regulations apply to the use of the products.

General comment on data set The declared product is a roller shutter shade with a headbox. The shade consists of hinge-connected roller shutter slats (also called roller shutter profiles). The product is used for exterior darkening and shading of windows. The shade profiles consist of a thin aluminum shell (Al) with a polyurethane filling (PUR). Descriptions of the product are always formulated from the interior perspective. The shade is wound on a shaft and, in the retracted state, is housed in the headbox above the window. In the lower part of the housing, profiles are provided with light slots. Through the light slots, the incidence of light and ventilation can be regulated. The product is available with motor, crank, and rope operation. The physical properties depend on the installation state, the installation time, and the course of the water-bearing layer. Depending on installation state, installation location, and position, the technical possibilities and properties are to be assessed differently. In essence, the roller shutter is intended to darken living spaces in front of the window. When used as solar protection, the light slots must be opened to prevent heat buildup between the window and the shade. An advantage of externally mounted roller shutters is that a high level of summer thermal protection can be achieved. The absorption heat resulting from solar radiation is dissipated outside the window component to be shaded by this system. The undesired intrusion of solar heat gains into the building interior is minimized.

Technological representativeness
Technology description including background system The weight per unit area of a representative ROMA roller shutter is 6.69 kg (excluding packaging materials). A width/length ratio of 2.0 m (width) x 2.5 m (hanging length) is assumed to be representative. This results in a total area of 5 m². All material and energy flows used in this representative sun shading system are scaled to the defined declared unit of 1 m² for the calculation of the LCA results according PCR.

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
